I went downtown on Friday to get the Smithsonian letterbox, but it
wasn't there. I searched the water fountain thoroughly (no one was
anywhere near me), but there was no sign of the letterbox. I hung
around, thinking someone might have taken it off to stamp, but it
never appeared.
Don't know if it was already taken away or what...

It was there on 12/24. It was the first one that I found. I
replaced it back where I had found it ... towards the front and up
inside.

This is so strange. I casually pretended to drop a glove so I could
bend down by the fountain and look underneath. Nothing there. Maybe
it's already been taken down. Who knows. Maybe I'm just a lunkhead
who couldn't find it. I didn't even see any signs of velcro. Just a
piece of gum. Ew.

Yes, there was a message recently from, I think, legerdemaine (who placed it)
that the log had filled up and she had removed it temporarily but planned to
put it back with a new log. So I guess don't bother to look for it until we hear it's
back.

No Worries! The SI castle box is back in place. Conveniently, I work
at SI and just walked over and checked. It is there. :)

Hurrah! Thank you for the update. Of course I come when the box is
out of commission. I have nothing if not timing. :)

Now this is really strange. The Yachtsman and I visited The
Smithsonian Letterbox on Monday, Dec 30th at about 10AM, and it was
certainly alive and well then. We waited until 10 because we had
some misinformation that the museum didn't open until then, but
it was actually open at 9 am.
There were two folded logs in the canister. One was totally full.
We were able to squeeze onto the last couple of spaces on the back
of the second one. Based on the date of your posting, we may
actually have had it out to stamp in when you tried to find it! An
amazing number of letterboxers had already stamped in before us in one
short month.
